Their packaging speaks for itself; chances are, you can tell some types straight away when you see them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But identifying each of the types and their uses can be tricky, and we\u2019re here to help. Since then, battery technology has been used around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/darksalmon-dugong-512221.hostingersite.com\/\"><strong><u><strong>battery<\/strong><\/u><\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;is a collection of one or more cells, storing electrical energy for powering electrical devices.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How does it work?<br>Chemical reactions create the flow of electrons within a circuit. But what we might not know is the underlying component inside it, which has a major part in producing voltage and current.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><em><strong><em>Cell<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong>&nbsp;This basic electrochemical unit handles the actual storage of energy in a battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cell contains three main components:&nbsp;<strong>two electrodes and an electrolyte.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s begin with the electrodes. There are two types: the&nbsp;<em>Anode<\/em>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<em>Cathode<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The anode is the negative electrode, whereas the cathode is the positive one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the anode loses electrons to the external circuit, it gets oxidised. It\u2019s also called the Fuel Electrode or the Reducing Electrode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, once the cathode accepts electrons from the internal circuit, it gets reduced. It\u2019s also called the Oxidising Electrode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where the energy conversion happens in a battery. It\u2019s due to the electrochemical oxidation-reduction reaction of a cell component.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third element is the&nbsp;<em>electrolyte<\/em>. It acts as the medium for transferring charge in the form of ions between two electrodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An electrolyte isn\u2019t electrically conductive but is an ionic conductive. Although there are several other classifications, these two are the basics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Primary (non-rechargeable)<\/li><li>Secondary (rechargeable)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Primary batteries are non-rechargeable ones. This means they can\u2019t be recharged with electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The secondary batteries work otherwise. This includes radios, watches, toys, lights, camera, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since they can\u2019t be recharged once they run out of power, they\u2019re the type to&nbsp;<em>\u201cdiscard immediately when discharged\u201d<\/em>.&nbsp;<strong>In short, they can\u2019t be used again.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Primary batteries are inexpensive, lightweight, and convenient to use with no maintenance. The majority used in domestic applications are single cell type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They usually come in a cylindrical form, such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiltronics.com.au\/product-category\/alkaline-batteries\/\"><em>Alkaline batteries<\/em><\/a>. They got their name from the electrolyte used in them: potassium hydroxide\u2014a pure alkaline substance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of primary battery is a chemical composed of zinc (Zn) and manganese dioxide (MnO2).&nbsp;It has a power density of 100 Wh\/kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other shapes and sizes of a primary battery include a coin-shaped one,&nbsp; a.k.a.&nbsp;<em>coin cell batteries<\/em>. They are often used in torches, remotes, wall clocks, small portable gadgets, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chemical composition of a coin cell battery is also alkaline. But it also contains lithium and silver oxide chemicals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These compounds make this small battery more efficient, providing steady and stable voltage.
